A very small puzzle:

Why do

    \begin{displaymath}
    0.37\;\denom{D\mathsmaller{EKA}\;Franklins} =
    370.\;\denom{M\mathsmaller{ILLI}\;Franklins}
    \end{displaymath}

and

    \begin{center}
    $0.37\;\denom{D\mathsmaller{EKA}\;Franklins} =
    370.\;\denom{M\mathsmaller{ILLI}\;Franklins}$
    \end{center}

not typeset the same way? (In the former, \mathsmaller does not seem to
have any effect.)

\DeclareMathAlphabet{\denom}{OT1}{cmss}{sbc}{n}
with
TeXShop 1.40 on Mac 10.3.9

Curious regards
