[OS X TeX] the color of color

With

    \usepackage{color}

the following

    \begin{displaymath}
    \colorbox{yellow}{$(+2)\oplus(+5)\oplus(-8)\oplus(+4)\oplus(-7)$}
    \end{displaymath}

works as well with green and blue but not with, say, orange.

Bent Petersen's Oct 24, 2000 "color-package-demo" says to use

    \usepackage[usenames]{color}

but after I added the option [usenames] in my preamble, even

    \textcolor{Orange}{this is Orange}

where Orange is one of "the 68 standard colors known to dvips", wouldn't
work.

What am I doing wrong?
(TeXShop 1.40, plain vanilla, on OS X 10.3.9)
