I believe the space is supposed to be a small space, `\,', and the \amt{}{}
macro I wrote does that:

\newcommand{\amt}[2]{\ensuremath{#1\,\mathrm{#2}}}

which allows for the small space. Usage: \amt{30}{\degC} gives 30°C with the
small space between the 30 and the °C. It also allows for super/sub-scripts,
e.g., \amt{9.8}{m/s^2}.
