Sorry for the late reply... Back to the topic of collapsing LaTeX constructs
and emacs...

There is a package for emacs which does exactly this... it's called talcum.

In summary: "... The defaults hide footnotes, label and referencing
commands, various spacing commands and low-level text markup..."
