preview-latex relies on preview.sty, which lives in the texmf.teTeX
tree. It will process a latex file and write only the equations to the
output (pdf or dvi), trying to get a tight bounding box around each. It
is designed to work with Emacs to produce more or less wysiwyg
previewing/editing of latex sources. The latex style file is fine and
stable, I've never worked with the rest of the system, but I can
imagine breaking it is far too easy, and since Peter Dyballa has been
playing with the newly released and broken release of CE emacs, I can
imagine something went wrong in that department.
