Howdy,

Turning on and off microtype/pdftex's font expansion shows up to a five
times increase in .pdf size so it isn't always negligible. Of course you
MUST embed to get microtype/pdftex font expansion at all.

I use font expansion only if I'm going to print and then discard the .pdf
file. For documentation I'd only use margin kerning and be done with it.
It's not as though TeX does a terrible job by itself; it's how incredibly,
evenly gray and lovely the margin kerning + font expansion document looks
along with the lack of hyphenation.

Did that a while ago, after I found my old Basic 35 Adobe Fonts. Setting
LW35 to ADOBE in updmap.cfg also allows you to use the original Adobe names
(with all the underscores) making it even easier to install.
