Hi,
there is a library called wvware (available as i-installer package; see
also http://wvware.sourceforge.net/), which seems to be able to convert
Word (up to Word 2000) to several output formats, LaTeX and HTML among
them. Actually, this seems to be what's working behind the scenes in
AbiWord.
I never tried it, but it seems promising.
