[OS X TeX] how to convert .doc to .TEX?

Howdy,

\protect does nothing but prevent expansion of the following command before
writing it to a file; e.g., that way the command makes it to the toc and is
expanded at that time. It's definitely NOT dangerous. In regular text it
ends up doing nothing.

I don't understand it; \emph is certainly NOT obsolete.
