Well, if I am labeling equations, for example, I usually do something 
like:

\begin{equation}
\label{equ:elliptical bands}
E=\pm \frac{\hbar^2}{2m_l^*}k_l^2+\frac{\hbar}{2m_t^*}k_t^2
\end{equation}

That is, you can use as much information in the label to make the label 
unique and meaningful.
