I looked at the Apple Virex discussion forum this morning, it seems  
Virex is simply incompatible with Tiger (it consumes a huge amount of  
CPU resources, apparently due to background scanning), and Norton AV  
is also incompatible:

There's even a copy of a message from .Mac support, confirming Virex  
isn't compatible, and telling that .Mac includes now email scanning  
as a part of its email service. But what about other email accounts?

Regarding the virus definition updates:

- You can download the DAT file in Mac .pkg format from <http:// 
www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/default.asp>. There'll  
be a screen asking you to confirm that you've got PrimeSupport, but  
given you've got Virex from .Mac and are entitled to update virus  
definitions, I assume that's no problem. Then you'll obtain a .gz  
file (I just tried and got V7050504.gz), which dragged onto StuffIt  
Expander yields a .pkg file.

- You can also download the same .pkg file from .Mac, through the  
succession of links:

     Login > Member Central > Virex (Panther Only) > Download >  
Download Virex Updates

- You can download the DAT file in Unix format from <http:// 
www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/updates/dat.asp>. Get the  
latest .tar file, untar it, then put IIRC the three files clean.dat,  
names.dat and scan.dat inside /usr/local/vscanx/.
