[OS X TeX] a4 unused

running TeXShop on 10.3, I notice that I am always told that LaTeX Warning: Unused global option(s):
    [a4].
    
    
    the resulting pdf seems to be US letter.
    
    er...can I persuade it to use a4? the opening of the document I'm currently using is

\usepackage {times}
 \usepackage{array, times, fancyhdr}
  \pagestyle{fancy}
  \lhead{left heading}
 \rhead{Dr Jason Davies}

\usepackage{hyperref}
 \setcounter {secnumdepth}{0} 
\begin{document}

(looks like it needs some pruning, but the point remains...)
