The man page says you can use info instead of Emacs, but typing "info
dvips" in Terminal brings up the same obsolete man page content.

The most recent source of info seems to be the dvips manual at /usr/
local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/doc/programs/dvips.pdf. The -R option
(with -R0 telling not to use -R) is documented at the bottom of p. 15:

‘-R’ Run securely. This disables shell command execution in \special
(via ‘‘’,
see Section 5.1.5 [Dynamic creation of graphics], page 27) and config
files (via
the ‘E’ option, see Section 3.4.2 [Configuration file commands], page
17), and
opening of any absolute filenames.

Thus Gerben seems to say -R is now the default, and affects not only
absolute filenames but also relative filenames?
