[OS X TeX] TeX Live 2004 and map files

After I upgraded my teTeX installation to the TeX Live 2004 version  
(I use pdftex), via i-Installer, the font map file I had created  
previously, and which had worked perfectly, ceased to function.   
Attempting to use any one of my local fonts caused a failed attempt  
to create it with Metafont, followed by a message that the font could  
not be found. "kpsewhich" confirmed that pdfTeX should search the  
path that contains the map and font files.

I downgraded to TeX Live 2003, and the map file functioned properly  
again.

I infer that something changed, but though I have searched both  
hither and yon, I failed to find a clue.  I will be much obliged if  
someone will enlighten me on this matter, which I sure is patently  
obvious from some perspective in some alternate universe.
