No, Axel! -L makes cp look for the file the link is pointing to and 
substitute the link with the file, preserving the link's name. A 
symbolic link is just a file (although a bit more complicated in 
Apple's HFS), so it's easy to just copy it. -L helps those who know 
that the symbolic link is pointing to a file outside the area that is 
going to be copied. Then it's useful to keep those 'external' files 
too. Otherwise you would have links pointing to non-existent files.

In case you were going to copy teTeX' bin directory all the many 
symbolic links in powerpc-apple-darwin-current would be replaced by 
those big files the links are pointing to. So you would have a few real 
*tex programmes -- and could be, since powerpc-apple-darwin-current is 
itself a symbolic link, this is substituted by a copy of the directory 
powerpc-apple-darwinX.Y with all sym-links 'fulfilled' ...
