Indeed, by replacing

    \begin{equation*}
    \begin(split}
    …
    \end{split}
    \end{equation*}

by

    \allowdisplaybreaks
    \begin{align*}
    …
    \end{align*}

I just reduced a 48 page document to 44 pages. Very nice. Not quite a 
tree's worth of paper but makes me feel ecologically virtuous.
