That does work. Given the journal class I'm using <ftp://
ftp.cup.cam.ac.uk/pub/texarchive/journals/latex/jfm-cls> inverts for
whatever reason the table and figure bits, compared with article.cls:
\def\ftype at table{1}
\def\ftype at figure{2}
I had to change your suggestion accordingly, but otherwise this
suggestion works perfectly.
Many thanks for this fast, short and highly efficient answer! I would
never have identified myself the LaTeX command governing this
behaviour, or it would precisely have required downloading from CTAN
the documented LaTeX source code and spending quite some time
studying it.
