[OS X TeX] TEXINPUTS?

Hello.  A new question: I used to have my pdflatex set up to look for  
\inputs in ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex .  I thought it came from adding  
that to the TEXINPUTS path in my .bashrc with a command like;

TEXINPUTS="$TEXINPUTS:.:$HOME/Library/texmf/tex/latex"
export TEXINPUTS

This doesn't work, however.  How can I set latex to look in that  
folder by default?  Thanks.
