It is difficult for me to talk from the paranoid point of view but I
will try. I found extremely few packages which are written by
i-installer to texmf.local; mpm also writes here (I prefer install
packages by mpm than manually since it is easier to look after
updates).

I do not feel the need on Mac in the fifth tree (actually four seem to
be too many) but some people could want it.
