I do not like seeing many generations of a thread, but I have had the 
opposite problem: I write something, and a few days later I get back a one 
to two word reply with no reminder of what I had said.  A "conversation" 
does not have long time gaps, and generally one is engaged in one 
"conversation" at a time.

My personal preference is to do what I have done here: Start with the 
relevant part of the thread to my response.

Another problem with multi-generational postings is that the formatting 
can get close to unreadable.  That is why I still use PINE for messages 
such as this -- I can control the formatting much better.
