[OS X TeX] (OT) converting old ps to pdf

At what moment this map played role? During dvips conversion? Is not
it the part of dvips subtree in tex tree? I have seen many bad old ps
coming from different sources. Also my experiments of few years ago
had shown that old dvips produced slightly smaller ps files. Also,
then why on some machines (I had no access to them, so I cannot
verify) -Ppdf solved the problem.
