[OS X TeX] (OT) converting old ps to pdf

It looks that there is more than one reason for ps file being bad:

ADistiller 8 fails but pkfix  works  on
http://www.math.iupui.edu/~mmisiure/open/EG1.ps
(pkfix-helper on the other hand does not seem to work on this file)

situation is opposite with


http://www.math.toronto.edu/quastel/papers/icmp.ps


Probably if pkfix does not always help it never hurts.

Further it seems that producing bad pdf leaves no options but to OCR

I tried to use PStill but it worked on neither of these files
