Yes, but the above is syntactically correct, though.

Actually I was thinking rather of TeX code produced automatically,  
for example by LyX or Scientific Word, or by the Convert to TeX  
functionality of GUI equation editors who have it. I remember, when  
starting to use TeX years ago, being puzzled by the TeX code produced  
by Expressionist.

Plus, having at times had to work with TeX input produced by other  
people -- colleagues or student -- who did not know TeX well and were  
using as a basis a document -- report or Master or PhD thesis for  
example -- coming from another person, I would say: never  
underestimate the amount of nonsense you may have to deal with.

Which means TeXShop, being aimed at simplicity and ease of use, and  
appeal to as large as possible a user base, must IMHO use as robust  
solutions as possible, and make as few assumptions as possible on the  
amount of TeX proficiency of its users.
