I do not an use expert mode since I prefer full install and I do have
other gwtex additions
- but beamer is not among them.

No, I don't - but I do have some additions in texmf.local - downloaded from
CTAN or sourceforge.
I suspect that without Gerben we will not be able to find an explanation.
