On my setup, the Drawer item on top of Preview's View menu is black
and working, while the Drawer item on top of TeXShop's (2.09a)
Preview menu is dimmed and unaccessible.

Thanks, I had never taken notice of this icon in either Preview or
TeXShop. It is indeed working in both; in particular, it allows the
Drawer to show up in TeXShop.

This Drawer seems to only display bookmarks, and not to offer a
choice to view page thumbnails as Preview does.

BTW, I just noticed something very odd: when using TeXShop to
visualize a DVI file located in a non-writable directory (for
example /Library/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/doc/fonts/amsfonts/
amsfndoc.dvi), the preview window has a different toolbar, taken from
previous versions of TeXShop: the Back/Forward and Toggle Drawer
buttons are absent and replaced by the former Typeset button, and the
Text button is absent.

If the same DVI file is moved to a writable directory first, such as
the Desktop, the toolbar is the standard one again.

I tried looking for the intermediary PDF file created by TeXShop when
visualizing a DVI file from a non-writable location: I thought it was
somewhere inside /var/tmp, but couldn't find it.
