Illustrations placed in a typeset .pdf are fine for pre-press if  
they're appropriate to begin with in terms of bitmap resolution and  
colour models &c.

In the past, I have had to flatten them out to do some modifications  
relating to changing colour and line weight &c., but any competent  
pre-press department should be able to handle such.
