Herb Schulz was suggesting using specific packages (called in the
preamble of your document via \usepackage) like sectsty or titlesec,
rather than doing any redefinition through \newcommand. See:

\bf is a command from LaTeX 2.09. It has been deprecated and replaced
in LaTeX 2e, publicly released in 1994, by \bfseries.

to LaTeX (such as the Master or PhD students at my institute) is, in

All the Roman, or serif, text from your document will be set in
Times. All sans-serif text will be set in Helvetica. All monospaced,
or typewriter-like, text will be set in Courier.
