[OS X TeX] Renewcommand \footnote

I need a version of the book without footnotes.

So, put, right after \begindocument—it didn't work when I put it in the 
preamble—

    \renewcommand{\footnote}{1}{}

but then, while the footnotes do indeed disappear, the footnote numbers 
do not.

What should I do?
