On the contrary: with the fonts and in particular the MAP file  
fragments in the private ~/Library/texmf tree the above command's  
output must be:

	/Users/<user name>/Library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/updmap/psfonts.map

I work in such an environment, built with updmap, although I have to  
confess that it's a long time that I used dvips (around last  
Christmas, checking the use of TTF from private MAP file fragments).  
I am committed to pdfTeX ... What reason makes you stick to dvips?  
(And where come these strange encoding names from?)

The contents of ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist can also affect command  
line programmes. The environment variables set by ~/.MacOSX/ 
environment.plist work in an universal system-wide scope. They are  
the only (?) way to make these environment variable settings known to  
Mac OS X GUI applications.
