Regarding the MacTeX list, it's quite normal you don't know about it:
this is a separate list that started as closed, invitation-only, and
to which you can now ask for subscription. This list <http://
www.tug.org/mailman/listinfo/mactex> is the discussion list of the
MacTeX Technical Working Group of TUG <http://www.tug.org/twg/mactex/>.

Generally I avoid mentioning this list, first given its closed nature
and also because of the naming confusion:

- MacTeX is also the name of the all-in-one distribution of TeX
<http://www.tug.org/mactex/>, prepared by members of the MacTeX
Technical Working Group under the supervision of Herb Schulz (who did
a lot of the hard work of putting the distribution together).

- Mac-TeX is also a shorthand name for the TeX on Mac OS X web site
<http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/> created by Gary Gray and maintained
by Joe Slater.

- And finally Mac-TeX is also often a shorthand for this mailing list.

« De quoi perdre son latin » as the French would say!
