[OS X TeX] Invisible character

To use Will Robertson's macros for tables, I modified them a bit—with
his help—to make it easier for me to see where to enter the stuff.
To that effect, I used the mac's bitten apple which was nice because it
didn't show on the pdf. Eventually, though, it did show—as a question mark.
Somehow, I don't remember how, the bitten apple got replaced by ð which,
so far, doesn't show on the pdf either. (But I don't know what key gives
it!)

Question: Other than \hspace{0mm}, is there something I can use in the
source that will /definitely/ not show in any pdf.

Regards
