It depends. If the OP is talking about plain TeX, there is no such thing as
\bfseries or \scshape. In LaTeX yes. 

In plain TeX there is no command for bold small caps. 
Anyway, the syntax used is wrong. The commands are *declarations*, not
commands with a parameter. So it should have been {\bf \sc type}, 
with the remark that \sc cancels the \bf.

The corresponding LaTeX command would be:
{\bfseries\scshape type}

or

\textbf{\textsc{type}}

Here \bfseries and \scshape are declarations but \textbf and \textsc are
commands with a parameter.
Unfortunately the standard TeX fonts don't have bold small caps, so you
have to use a different font.
