I use something like this:

	   \immediate\write16{Wir sind bei PDF gelandet}
	%   \usepackage[protrusion=true,expansion=false]{microtype}
	   \usepackage{epstopdf}	% aber dann als pdflatex -shell-escape!
	   \immediate\write16{Wir sind bei DVI gelandet}
	   \DeclareGraphicsExtensions{.eps,.ps,.png,.gif,.jpg}	% zu viele
