[OS X TeX] Dots in file names

   Yes, indeed, it is inadvisable to use these characters  
indiscriminately ...

    ... but the  _  (underscore) character is safe in a file-name for  
I/O.

However, if you also want to typeset the name in documentation, then
you'll have to be careful of its category-code.


I think  +  is OK too, as are digits (of course).
Also, avoid  &  and  % , and  #  may be bad too.

p.278 of the TeXbook says that TeX does not define the syntax for
what constitutes a file-name. This can be platform-specific.
