Neither cases nor array will provide a simple way to number equations  
separately.  To achieve that you may use the empheq package:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amsmath,empheq}
\begin{document}
\begin{empheq}[left=\left\{,right=\right.]{align}
   \label{eq:1}
   E &= mc^2,\\
   \label{eq:2}
