[OS X TeX] creating captions for graphics

Does the following code fail?

	    \caption{gefederter Sitz}

With \AtBeginDocument{\renewcommand{\figurename}{Bild}} I get for the  
pictures 'Bild 1: <some text>', Bild 2: <some other text>' ...



When confronted with actual numbers, a mathematician is at a loss.
