[OS X TeX] tables

I am writing a book, of sorts.  I want to include figures and tables  
which are prefixed by the chapter to which they belong.  Is there a  
way to do either of the following:

1.  Create chapter-specific appendices, which are prefixed by "Table  
1.x," "Table 2.x," "Table 3.x" for Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (respectively)?

2.  If not a chapter-specific appendix, how does one create these  
kinds of tables to float within the chapter alone?
