I don't think so: of course you do not find the answer your searching  
at once, but you see some other choices you never thought of. The  
index is great, you can find an entry that is very close to what  
you're just thinking of. And in its vicinity you can gather some  
related entry. The book helps a lot to find a good (optimal) solution.

Questioning the TeX FAQ additionally is probably the best way: you  
get at least two different and detailed opinions on your problem. (My  
short answer was driven from experience and from trying to give you  
just the right few lines without need to try to understand more.)
