[OS X TeX] Problem with index using memoir

Dear TeXShop-users,

I have problems with creating an index for my dissertation using TeXShop
and the memoir class (TeXShop 1.40, Mac OS X, 10.2.8).
This is the code I use for a small example with three indexed items in my
dissertation (the 3 items are marked in the document like this:
item\index{item}):

\documentclass[10pt,a4paper,showtrims,twoside]{memoir}
\usepackage{layouts}
\usepackage{url}
\usepackage{fixltx2e}
\usepackage{alltt}
\usepackage{graphicx, latexsym}
\usepackage{amssymb, amsmath, amsthm}
\usepackage{bm}
\usepackage{palatino}
\usepackage{mathpazo}
\usepackage{epstopdf}
\usepackage{tipa}
\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{longtable}
\usepackage[numberedbib,bibnewpage,nosectionbib,tocbib]{apacite}
\makeindex
...
\begin{document}
\frontmatter
...
\mainmatter
...
\backmatter
\printindex
\end{document}

I typeset one time using the MakeIndex option and the console gives the
following text:

This is makeindex, version 2.14 [02-Oct-2002] (kpathsea + Thai support).
Scanning input file ProefschriftLFcopy.idx....done (3 entries accepted, 0
rejected).
Sorting entries....done (4 comparisons).
Generating output file ProefschriftLFcopy.ind....done (13 lines written, 0
warnings).
Output written in ProefschriftLFcopy.ind.
Transcript written in ProefschriftLFcopy.ilg.

This seems to be ok. And after that the .ind file looks like this:

\begin{theindex}

  \item dissimilarity, 1

  \indexspace

  \item features, 1

  \indexspace

  \item network, 1

\end{theindex}

I typset again, this time using the LaTeX option and the following error
appears in the console: use of \printindex doesn't match its definition.
And no index appears at the end of the document. Do you have any idea what
I am doing wrong here?

Thanks for your attention.

Kind regards,
Laurence Frank
