I can give you a one line description, if you happened to download my
TeXSwitcher while it had been available for downloading: Just click
on the button that suits your needs and enter your password when you
are asked to.

I already use the set up, that I favour, on my machine and switching
between tetex, texlive2500, texlive/2005 works on the fly,
effortlessly and smoothly. TeXShop, Flashmode, my Applescripts, and
the command line all three approaches to the tex binaries, including
texdoc, bibtex, metapost, makeindex, you name it, work smoothly.
There are no edges.

As I understand, most people don't use the command line at all, these
people could use the new set up without worrying that they might get
the wrong tex binaries on the command line.
