Nice outing ;) Anyway, here's what I did. I updated to 2.85, and I  
copied the i-packages from my backup from before the problem into my  
i-package directory. I then updated tex.ii2. Worked perfectly. Either  
it was a transient problem, or your changes in 2.85 fixed it. Thanks!
