[OS X TeX] Fixed-size table

One approach is to replace
    &    \textbf{a}

with
    &    \makebox[10pt][c]{\textbf{a}}

which will place \textbf{a} inside a 10pt box. Then, all columns will  
be 10pt wide and as long as column entries are no bigger than 10 pt  
(or any other width you choose), column width will remain uniform.
