[OS X TeX] Quoting in XeLaTeX

How should one produce proper quotation marks in XeLaTeX? Apparently,
the regular LaTeX way, i.e.
``something in quotes''
(opening with two backquotes and close with two forward quotes) works
if no specific font is indicated, but as soon as one selects a font
the above
just places the same back- and forward quote characters, yielding an
ugly output...
A minimal example:
%%%%%%%
%!TEX TS-program = xelatex
%!TEX encoding = UTF-8 Unicode
\documentclass{book}
\usepackage{fontspec}
\usepackage{xunicode}
\usepackage{xltxtra}
\defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}
\font\txt="Verdana" at 10pt
\begin{document}
\txt
``something in quotes''
\end{document}
