That's because you're using a Plain TeX font-switching mechanism
which doesn't enable the fontspec feature you're turning on here:
> \defaultfontfeatures{Mapping=tex-text}
use \setromanfont{Verdana} instead or some variant thereof (see the
fontspec manual for the details).
