[OS X TeX] Anybody having success with mbboard?

Only the second location should have worked, but it would have  
required a preliminary "sudo mktexlsr" after putting the .mf files in  
place.

Recommended locations for additional .mf files would be either

~/Library/texmf/fonts/source/public/mfbb/

or

/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/fonts/source/public/mfbb/

The following would also work

~/Library/texmf/metafont/mfbb/
/usr/local/texlive/2007/../texmf-local/metafont/mfbb/

but the directories texmf/metafont seem to be reserved in TeXLive for  
files read at the time of creation of the .base files (the MetaFont  
equivalent of TeX's formats), like modes.mf.

For recommended font file organization in TeX tree, see section 3.2 of

/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-doc/doc/english/tds/tds.pdf

And to find out exactly where TeX and friends look for font files,  
you can use kpsewhich, as described in section 3.5 of

/usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf/doc/kpathsea/kpathsea.pdf

Specifically, in Terminal the invocation "kpsewhich --progname=mf -- 
show-path=.mf" should yield a list of the directories looked by  
MetaFont for .mf files, in decreasing order of precedence. On my  
setup I get, after a bit of reformatting for clarity,

~/Library/texmf/metafont//
