[OS X TeX] transparent background in pdf images in TeXShop

As LaTeXit doesn't seem to be working in Leopard I am using TeXShop to  
create symbols to drag into Omnigraffle. No matter what settings I  
make in preferences the result doesn't seem to have a transparent  
background. I can cheat by pushing the image into the background in  
Omnigraffle. Strangely if I open the TeXShop created pdf in Preview  
and select the symbol the result has a transparent background in  
Omnigraffle.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong.  The OS and all  
applications are up to date.

I guess I should check the pref's are saving.  Can anyone tell me what  
the correct pref's should be and which settings they are when I do  
`defaults read texshop' ?
