I thought like you, that it was some rare English word (evoked
"asparagus" to me) which I was planning to look at in a dictionary
some day.
A bit of googling reveals it's actually one environment for
enumerated lists defined by the paralist package. The documentation
for this package is omitted in TeXLive and gwTeX, but it can be
retrieved from CTAN. See also <http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/
