Well, if you replace a file as expected by metapost (a dvi file with
text, to be placed in the metapost output) with a different file
(pdf, or xdv), then you can expect the metapost run to fail. You can
of course let metapost use tex, but then you don't get the font
features from xetex.
That was what I was trying to communicate: the intermediate files
expected by metapost cannot be produced by xetex. The output of
metapost will be compatible, as it is a subset of postscript, and the
interpreted to get it into tex is written in tex, which should just
port over to xetex. That still leaves the fonts though…
