Actually, I didn't look carefully enough---in spite of the line

%!TEX TS-program = xelatex (percetange, admiration, etc.)
%!TEX encoding = UTF-8 Unicode

my file was compiled with pdflatex and that did work. Compiling with  
xelatex seemed to work, but the pdf indeed contains no visible picture.
