Alan--
Surprisingly, my school doesn't require numbered sections...if
anything, our dissertations look very much like the apa
[man]-generated output, except for minor variations (for instance, we
don't use bold headings for chapter/section titles). One of the
problems I've been having with the report style is having to create
macros that do, in fact, include unnumbered sections in the ToC.
I'll check out titlesec as well, thanks for the suggestion.
