I guess that this is a question to Maurino: it would be good if
he resolved it. All variants worked fine for me all the time too: with
pdflatex and latex; with the strict and abbreviated ("lazy") syntax of
the logical operator.
Thanks for pointing me to the arguments of ifthenelse. And of course,
thanks to Maurino's problem; without it, we wouldn't have learned about
the extended ifthenelse syntax.
